Waring WTO150 Review – Oven With Built In Toaster

For some people, a toaster oven may not be good enough when it comes to making toast. A traditional toaster may still be easier to use and control. However, a toaster can’t do anything else apart from toasting. Want to heat up a pizza or leftovers? You still need an oven for it. So, if you want an appliance that can do these 2 functions at the same time, you should take a look at the Waring WTO150 4-slice toaster oven with built-in 2-slice toaster. The review of this unit below will help you to decide if this is the ideal model for your home.

How Wide Is The Waring WTO150 Toaster Slots?

The 2-slice toaster at the side can take in both bagels and bread. The slots are about 1.3″ wide and slightly over 5″ long. There is a dial for you to set the darkness level and once ready, the carriage lever will automatically pop up. You can also cancel the toasting cycle mid-way by using the same dial. To remove crumbs from the toaster, there is a pull-out crumb tray at the side for cleaning convenience. Basically, having both oven and pop-up toaster in a single unit gives you more options for your bread and you can also toast 6 slices at once by using both functions at the same time.

Other features that are worth mentioning for this 2-in-1 toaster oven include the following:

  • 3 key cooking functions – Bake, broil and toast are the 3 main cooking modes for this Waring model. It is a basic model similar to the Black & Decker TO1303SB. Cooking functions, temperature and timer are controlled via dials which are intuitive and easy to use. You won’t have much that you need to figure out with this unit out of the box.
  • Bagel button – The toaster side has an additional bagel button which you can press to add extra time to the toasting cycle and to evenly toast both sides of the bagel. So, apart from toasting bread, you also have the additional option of using the toaster for bagels instead of turning on the oven.
  • 30-minute timer – The half-an-hour timer is helpful to alert you when your food is ready. A bell will sound when the timer runs out.
  • 2 rack levels – This is a plus because it gives more room to accomodate a wider variety of food. Many small ovens have only a single rack height like the Black & Decker TO1332SBD 4-slice toaster oven.
  • Simultaneous operation – You can use both the oven and side toaster simultaneously. This saves time if you need more toasts or have bread and other types of food to pop into the oven for a meal.
  • 4-slice capacity oven – The oven can fit 4 slices of bread with .45 cubic ft. capacity. The exterior measures 19″ (W) x 13″ (D) x 9″ (H). The depth measurement includes 2″ or so for the handle. At 19″ wide, it is similar to the width of a 6-slice toaster oven. The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven measures 18.5″ wide. So, basically, you are swapping the wider interior of a 6-slice oven for a regular toaster at the side. The interior of the Waring WTO150 is about 10″ (W) x 10″ (D) x 7″ (H).

A short clip below will further demonstrate the features of this countertop oven:

Should You Buy The Waring WTO150 Toaster Oven Combo?

Pros
  1. waring wto150 countertop ovenFair price – The price is reasonable for this combo unit. A good quality regular toaster will cost you about $30. A basic toaster oven with a reputable brand name will set you back by another $50. For example, the Cuisinart TOB-80 retails for around $55 at the time of writing. So, you will still need to pay about $80 if you are buying the 2 appliances individually which is about the cost of the Waring WTO150. But for the same price, you are also getting the convenience and flexibility of 2 functions in 1 unit.
  2. Saves space – If you need both a countertop oven and a regular toaster and you have a lack of space, a combined unit may be the answer. You will save a few inches of space this way. A 4-slice toaster oven is commonly 15″ wide while a regular toaster may come up to 8″ wide. This is excluding the space allowance needed around the appliances. So, if every inch counts on your countertop, this could be a good fit in your kitchen. The only narrower toaster oven we have come across is the Panasonic Flash Xpress which is 13″ wide compared to the usual 15″ for a 4 -slice capacity unit.
  3. Aluminized steel interior – The oven does not have a nonstick interior which is a must for those who are worried about the effects of Teflon on their health. The other Waring model without a nonstick coating is the TCO650 Digital Convection Oven.
  4. Easy to use – With 3 dials altogether, it is easy to get started with the oven. A timer is also handy to remind you when food is ready and to shut off the heat for safety purposes.
Cons
  1. Toaster doesn’t last – There have been quite a number of complaints from buyers that the toaster does not last long. Some found it to have broken down in a few short months while others have had it for just over a year. The complaints range from a malfunctioning carriage lever to a total breakdown of the heating element. For an alternative, you might like to look at the Hamilton Beach Toastation instead.
  2. No stay on function – This is a drawback because the timer is short at 30 minutes. This is less than what you might need for baking purposes and other recipes. Even a cheap unit like the Oster TSSTTVVG01 has a continuous cooking feature for more convenience.

Based on the reivew of the Waring WTO150 above, we feel that it is hard to recommend a buy for this model. The high number of malfunction complaints for the toaster makes this a high risk investment. Once the toaster is gone, you are just left with the oven and it defeats the purpose of having a dual function unit even if the oven works well enough for a variety of food.

It is a shame that the toaster couldn’t be a better performer. Otherwise, it would be a great space-saver unit as it is one of the very few combo units in the market. Therefore, if you are desperate for a toaster oven with a built-in toaster, the Waring WTO150 may be the only logical choice. Otherwise, look further and there are plenty of better ones in the market.
