Small and simple to operate define the Oster TSSTTVVG01 4-slice toaster oven. If you are cooking for one or two people, why invest in a big unit? A small one can be sufficient if you are not too fussy about the features. This review will consider this aspect of the toaster oven and check out exactly how it works.
Oster TSSTTVVG01 Review – Is There A Timer?
While basic makes the appliance cheap, there are certainly a
few features that should not be missing from the list. One of
these features is the timer. Without a timer, you will have no
auto shut-off for safety. For the Oster TSSTTVVG01, it has a
30-minute timer dial. Once the countdown is completed, the
unit’s bell will ring and the oven will automatically
shut off the heating elements.
Other features of this toaster oven include:
- 1000-watt
- 3 cooking functions
- Stay on option
- 2 rack positions
- Removable crumb tray
- Power light indicator
- Baking tray
- Size: 15.8″ (W) x 8.8″ (D) x 8.2″ (H)

Apart from the timer, this model also has the continuous cooking option for recipes longer than 30 minutes. It gives greater flexibility for cooking a wider range of recipes without having to reset the timer. However, you will need to manually turn the oven off if you select to use the stay on feature.
3 cooking options are available with this unit – bake, broil and toast. The temperature control dial goes all the way to 450°F. Below it is the timer dial which is also used to set the toast shade. You can choose to turn off the oven mid-cycle by rotating the timer dial anti-clockwise until it reaches the Off position.
This unit also has a dual rack position and a removable crumb tray for clean-up. The accessories are not dishwasher-safe.
Designed to fit 4 slices of bread, the outside dimensions of the Oster TSSTTVVG01 is about 15.8″ wide by 8.8″ deep by 8.2″ high. The depth is including the oven door handle. Inside, the width is approximately 11″.
Should You Buy The Oster TSSTTVVG01 4-Slice Toaster Oven?
Pros
- Cheap – The features are basic which helps to bring down the price compared to the upper-end models. At the time of review, the retail price for this appliances is less than $30, comparable to the Hamilton Beach 31138.
- Simple to understand – The controls are limited to 2 dials – a temperature/functions dial and a timer/toast shade dial. Setting the desired temperature and time is intuitive compared to a digital model like the Breville BOV450XL which has various buttons to press to get it running.
- Works well enough – The unit works well enough to dish out simple and quick meals for one to two persons. You have to watch your food, especially toasts, to make sure it is not overdone but the bottomline is you can rely on it to do the cooking for the small price that you pay.
Cons
- Timer ticks – Some users find this to be annoying as the timer ticks away as it counts down to zero. So, if you prefer a quiet unit, you will have to stay away from this one.
- Flimsy – A few buyers are dissatisfied with the construction of this toaster oven which they feel is cheaply made with plastic dials that don’t seem to be durable. There are certainly much better quality compact toaster ovens out there like the Cuisinart TOB-100, but for that, you will need to fork out at least $50 more.
- Inconsistent toast results – Because the timer dial is also the toast shade setting, you will have to reset the shade each time you toast. Thus, it can be difficult to get consistent results each time as the settings are not as refined as what you would get with a digital model. Some consumers also find it hard to get the dial to click in place for the desired setting. If you prefer a toaster oven with a separate toast shade setting, take a look at the Black & Decker TO3210SSD.
Generally, there is nothing to boast about this Oster toaster oven. It works but it certainly isn’t top-notch with much room for improvement. The heat up is slower than a higher-powered unit and there is a tendency of ending up with burnt toast if you are not watching.
Therefore, we would give the Oster TSSTTVVG01 a miss. There are definitely better toaster ovens out there to spend your money on. For example, there are quite a few Black & Decker and Hamilton Beach units that cost less than $50 which we think would be a better buy. The Black & Decker TO1303SB is one such unit.
